OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, has announced the launch of ChatGPT plug-ins, which have been highly sought after since the introduction of ChatGPT. These plug-ins will gradually be introduced as the company assesses their real-world impact. OpenAI has invited select developers from the waitlist to start creating ChatGPT plug-ins using their documentation. The first batch of plug-ins has already been developed by various companies, including Slack, Wolfram, and Expedia.
ChatGPT plug-ins are a new feature that will enhance the functionality of OpenAI's language model. Third-party developers will be able to integrate external tools and services with ChatGPT, enabling it to perform a wide range of tasks beyond generating human-like text. OpenAI has used an analogy to describe the plug-ins as "eyes and ears" for language models, providing access to real-time information that may be personal or recent. However, user consent is required before access to this information is granted.
The ChatGPT plug-ins will enable more use cases for AI and allow it to access information that may be too recent, personal, or specific to be included in the training data. This will expand the range of possible applications, offering new opportunities to tackle challenges associated with large language models. However, the deployment of ChatGPT plug-ins also presents new risks, such as the potential for mistaken or misaligned actions taken by the model in new domains. OpenAI has put safeguards in place to mitigate these risks.
